  • Rahmatullah (24, on the left) is travelling together with his middle brother Aziz (21, on the right). He is fluent in English as he used to work as a translator for the American army. He left Afghanistan once and lived in the US for two years until he was asked to leave the country because of a fight he had had with a US solder in Afghanistan. He said that what happened was that he stopped the US solder when he entered a house and tried to rape a young Afghani mother. He had to return to Afghanistan. He stayed there for two years but he often received threats because Afghanis saw him as someone who had collaborated with the “infidel”. Six months ago they attacked and injured his younger brother with a hand-grenade, mistaking him for Rahmatullah. He and his brother Aziz left Afghanistan 45 days ago and crossed to Greece via Turkey. Their final destination is Denmark where they already have members of their family living there. <br />
Moria refugee camp is a bit further out of Mytilene city and it is divided in two sections. The inner part is well organised with buildings and police guarding it, and the outer part where mainly Afghan refugees live in tents and is purely guarded with chaotic situations, mainly during food distribution, frequently occur.

  • Ms HIROKO KATAKEYAMA. Hiroshima A-Bomb survivor, siting in front of an old map showing the epicenter and the range or the A-bomb in the city of Hiroshima. Elementary school student who was four kilometers from the epicenter. She lost many of her relatives in the bombing, including her cousin who was the same age. We felt worn our and usually retreated to the barn, away from the quarreling adults. One day my cousin confessed that his hair had started falling out. I still vividly remember his blank face, frightened at this sign of death. She still cries when she tells this story and is one of the few survivors who confesses to hating America. When she was invited by the UN to speak in New York two years ago, she almost didn't go. "I couldn't bear the thought of going to the US".

  • MICHIKO YAMAOKA Hiroshima A-Bomb survivor, in front of her mother's picture inside her appartment. She was 15 years old and a third-year student at a girl's middle school. She was working as a mobilized student at the Hiroshima Central Telephone Office and at the time of the bombing she was on her way to work. She was badly injured and would have died under a wall that collapsed on her, if her mother wouldn't have come to her rescue. Her face was disfigured by the injuries and by keloids that grew on it. Her condition made her want to die but her mother's support helped her regain the will for life. Later she went to the US and had 27 surgical operations on her keloids. She is one of the survivors who tell their stories in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and she has been even traveling overseas to tell her story.

  • Kanha Thy (22) together with her 3 years old son, in the room that she shares with 5 more people in a slam behind the "building". She grew up in the slum and when she was 14, her mother was sick and bleeding (possible because a miscarriage) and a neighbor taught her in to selling her virginity to a foreigner for 150 US$ so that she can buy medicine to help her. From the $150 she had to give him $50 for helping her. Since then she started working as a prostitute, going to bars to pick up foreign customers. To make herself look older she had to wear make-up and high hills and this way she could enter the bars with no problems. She got married when she was 19 but her husband doesn't make much money out of collecting scrub so she still works as a prostitute and continues even now that she is expecting her second child, by hiding her belly under layers of cloths.
