TOYAMA MEDICINE.Interior of IKEDAYA YASUBEI SHOTEN, a traditional medicine shop in Toyama city. At the front right is a machine for cutting pills in a traditional way. Ikedaya-Yasubei Shoten preserves the atmosphere of a time-honored herbal medicine shop. "Ecchu-hangontan" written on it's front sign is said to be a miracle medicine that reinvigorates one's body. In the shop, visitors can watch a demonstration of making pills by using the traditional hand-operated pill maker. Toyama's pharmaceutical tradition has a more than 300 years history. There are now approximately 100 manufactures and over 100 factories in Toyama in terms of pharmaceutical products and Toyama prefecture acquires a steady reputation as Japan's medicine manufacturing base.
