Otaku—nerd, über-fan, obsessive collector. Since the 1980s, the term has been used to refer to fans of Japanese anime, manga, and video games. The word appeared with no translation on the cover of the premier issue of Wired magazine in 1993.
These portraits are part of the book OTAKU SPACES that was published in 2012. The book is a collaboration with writer Patrick Galbraith.
The people in the photos can be called otaku as their hobby has become an important part of their lives. Their rooms are filled with items of their collections, manga, toys, figures, games, costumes, etc. Some of the girls are "idols" playing an important role in the scene and others live seemingly ordinary lives but when in their rooms or in the company of likeminded friends, they can become superheros, play games of visit the latest maid cafes in Akihabara.
