IMAGES from GREECE

20 images Created 24 May 2021

Greece is the familiar. My identity- my mother land, which I began to comprehend with the distance. Being the commissioned photographer for the 2004 Olympic Games, was my ticket to move to Japan. Seeing Greece from afar, I rediscover it. Many questions were born that I begin to find answers to, by photographing Greece again through the eyes of an almost "stranger".

  • Angelos (25) has been dressing as "harapi" every year since the age of 10.<br />
“Arapis” or “Harapi” costume is made by a thick felt-like fabric, it features a hunchback, heavy animal bells hanging around the waist, pig-fur shoes and a goat fur over the head and shoulders. The face is painted black by using ashes from the fireplace. Arapis dressed people move sideways while swinging their hips in order to make noise and they carry a wooden sword and a wooden club similar to the one used in ancient “Anthestiria” ceremonies. They act as protectors of the bride during the wedding reenactment. The roots of this character are set to be in ancient Dionysus ceremonies but also in the Christian tradition.

  • Evaggelia Drougia (R). Evi (L) and Konstantina (C) Tassiou washing carpets in "nerotrivi", the village water whirl for washing clothes and carpets. The water used in nerotrivi flows from the mountains and after entering the whirlpool it ends in Aoos river that goes through the village. No soap is allowed to be used when washing so that the river remains clean. The water flow is enough to clean the carpets and that is why this old way of washing is still used by the local people today.
